Greek Life in College Social Structures

Throughout many colleges, especially larger universities, Greek life is a common thread. From sororities like Kappa Alpha Theta and Chi Omega to fraternities like Sigma Chi, Greek life plays a large role in college social life. Today, teenagers are familiar with the idea even before going to college due to movies such as Legally Blonde and Pitch Perfect portraying sororities and fraternities. But what exactly is Greek life, and how is it a part of college social structure?

What is Greek life?

Greek life is an intricate system that is most common throughout the United States, and is also known as fraternities and sororities.

Greek life as a social structure

Fraternities and sororities today are a place for students to find a group identity built on foundations of friendship and belonging. They are also significant college social structures.

Subculture

Greek life has its own subculture, with each fraternity and sorority holding different traditions and rituals yet all having common values. From leadership, service, and responsibility, to building character and friendship, each organization promotes principles that guide their members. On top of this, unique traditions form distinctive cultures for each fraternity and sorority. Celebrating holidays like Christmas or having yearly charity benefits all make Greek life an important part of college social life.

Social dynamics

Greek life also has social dynamics that mimic societal social structures, including harmful ones. Almost every Greek life institution involves social climbing, exclusivity, and hierarchies. As with any social structure, people want to rise to the top, and those at the top often abuse their power. For example, senior members often force freshmen to participate in initiation rites, most of which are dangerous. Particularly, hazing is a common initiation ritual where members engage in harmful and illegal activities, such as forced consumption of substances, damaging property, harassment, and embarrassment.

While Greek life gives students a sense of structure, security, and acceptance in a place filled with uncertainty, college students shouldn’t feel pressured to join a fraternity or sorority. Greek life is a significant social structure in college, but many students also find friendships and connection through other ways, such as their hobbies or through classes. It’s important to recognize how Greek life can be a harmful social structure, but it's also crucial to see why Greek life can be useful for students in college and beyond.
