The Future of 3D Printed Housing Designs: Sustainable or Excessive?

Joseph Krisnanto

As a direct result of population growth, there have been multiple housing crises growing more prominent in the years. There simply isn’t enough housing to go around. In certain circumstances, people in lower socioeconomic statuses struggle to secure housing plans in the long term, which generates a multitude of issues.

However, recently, there has been significant potential in finding a solution to this problem thanks to 3D printed homes. CEO of ICON 3D, a company specializing in the 3D printed homes field, Jason Ballarda states, “That means the housing of our future can’t—not shouldn’t, but can’t—be like the housing we have now.” He emphasized the importance of taking immediate action on this problem and is planning on doing it through 3D printed housing.

In its nature, the concept of creating housing through 3D printers is an idea with great potential - it’s sustainable and significantly cheaper and doesn’t require workers to physically labor, and above all, 3D printed houses are created remarkably quicker than standard forms of house construction. However, many don’t necessarily like this idea.

There have been mixed feelings about these houses, because people believe that it doesn’t feel organic enough. The houses are created through a very strange, dystopian form and can’t be compared to a standard, “homey” house. Additionally, there have been many opinions stating that the houses appear unsightly and would only serve as homes used in dire situations.

Conclusion

The 3D printed houses are still in heavy development and certainly aren’t at their potential. The concept allows for a lot of versatility, such as customization or innovative designs. There’s still a lot of room for improvement, but 3D houses have a lot of possibilities for success in the future.
